France has Champagne, Italy has Prosecco and Spain has Cava… but with the meteoric rise of the reputation of English Sparking Wine there has been a struggle as to what to call it. It seems English Winemakers now how have a solution… or do they?
When you think about Champagne or Prosecco they conjure up images of sophistication, high society and celebration. However, the new official name for English Sparking Wine, as backed by the UK Vineyard Association somehow seems to miss the same mark.
The association are suggesting that UK winemakers begin using the term ‘British Fizz’ on their bottles in order to differentiate it from it’s more established French, Italian and Spanish rivals. But, not everyone is convinced by the new name… myself included.
British Fizz. It just does not seem to have the right resonance. To me it suggests more alco-pop than a refined premium product. That being said, it is easier to criticise that create and I cannot really think of anything too much better.
If you have any bright ideas please comment below.

If that is the best they can come up with they should just stick with British or English Sparkling Wine
What about ‘Champange’ or ‘Chempagne’. Would anyone notice after a couple of glasses? : )
They need a posh name for British wine like Regency, Regal, Sovereign, or a name that represents this country in some form.
Chris, I think you might be close here!!!
Seriously though, I agree ‘British Fizz’ is terrible. Why not think of something connected with what the French haven’t got – Royalty. So get the queen’s backing and brainstorm something with ‘Royal’ or ‘Crown’ in it, or whatever? (Bubblyroyale? Sparklecrown? Royalsparkle? etc ?)
British Bubbly
Just can’t get excited about British Fizz in any way. I suggest they drink several bottles of it BEFORE trying to come up with a better one 🙂
Most of my Brand names and designs came after copious amounts of alcohol and generally represent what the product is….. Chillchaser, PowerSpike, BugSquad, HydraSport
To stimulate the right side of the brain you would use Alcohol or stimulants which is why pop stars etc are mostly p**s/pot heads 😉
What about Jubbly as in “lovely jubbly”

‘British Fizz’ sounds cheap and nasty, even ‘British Sparkling’ sounds a little better.
Sod the name, where can I buy some?
Brava – short and then “I would rather have a Brava” could be the tag line.
